Huehuetenango...
More of a Place to Pass Through
Huehue
is someplace you go to because you are on the way to somewhere else. It's citizens
are mainly ladinos. The traditional costumes you see are mostly worn by people
visiting it's market from smaller villages. The market is supplying the locals.
Handicrafts are few...and usually from somewhere else. It has a small, late
post-classic Mayan site that was rather poorly restored in terms of retaining
the original look. An hour or two will suffice. Local buses run out there or
you can grab a taxi. Several hotels in town that cater as much to Guat. business
folks as tourists. Hotel Mary is probably the nicest of the cheapies that cater
to gringos. Take your pick from local restaurants. I've never really had a
bad meal there...or a truly outstanding one. Values are good.
Heading on Down the Road
You will probably spend a night here if you are going to Todo Santos.
Other than that this is the last major stop before the Mexican border at
La Mesilla. I've never tried to cross at night and just wouldn't recommend
it. Accomodations at the border...if there are they have to be pretty bad.
So if you find yourself arriving in Huehue late afternoon on the way to
or from the border...grab a hotel and hunker down for an early start in
the morning.
