La Paz

Hostal Republica -I've stayed here 8 times. Excellent value just a short (level) walk from the Plaza Murrillo...location of the Presidential Palace, Congress, Cathedral and a great ice cream parlor. Popular with mountain climbers. I've stored gear here for up to a month.

Heredia

Debbie King's Country Inn

Montezuma

Hotel El Jardin

Nosara

Guilded Iguana

Playa Grande

Ferrari's Surf Resort

Puerto Viejo

Banana Azul- I won't provide a link to this one. This place is not for 99% of the population. They push a blatant gay agenda. If you don't want your kids bothered stay away from this one. One of those places that evidently hasn't heard of HIV.

Puerto Viejo Web -Hotels and a whole bunch more.

San Jose

Hotel del Rey -Home of the Blue Marlin Bar. For those who don't know about this place you don't bring the family here. Prostitution is legal in Costa Rica and this is one of the safest places in the country to indulge.

San Jose Airport Hotels

Cuenca

Mama Latina -Inexpensive lodging and food. Comes with some good reviews.

Antigua -Antigua map

The hotel scene in Antigua has gone through some major changes. There are of course the high end places for the rich. But there are an increasing number of hotels in the $60-$100US range that let you experience the real colonial ambiance. Not backpacker style...but most of even that group could probably afford one night of splurge.

Note: I'm listing those with contact info. The really cheap places at best have a phone...but usually don't take reservations except those made in person.

If you are looking to stay long term in Antigua then an excellent source of information about local real estate can by found at Bamboo Group SA.

Posada del Angel -Rated as one of the best in the world. Clinton once stayed here. If you really like it it is for sale.

Posada El Antano-Antigua

Posada Guest House Casa Mi Antigua -Weekly and monthly rates. Kitchen access.

Ashanti's Place - New budget accomodations in a good location.

Hotel Aurora - Been a hotel for over 75 years.

Hotel Casa Azul -Close to center with a strong colonial design.

Las Camelias Inn -At $45 a double this compares very favorably with similar priced hotels.

Casa Capuchinas - Singles start at $45. Got 6 people? Rent the whole house.

La Casona de Antigua - One of the higher end places.

The Cloister Bed and Breakfast - Another high end but this one is at the arch. Originally a colonial home. Has weekly rates.

Hotel Convento -You'll never get lost if you stay here. This is located at the arch. Part of the original convent. Singles start at $70 and yeh..you are paying in part for location. Rooms are OK. It does cater to tour groups. Restaurant is nice.

Hotel Cristal -Kitchen access

Casa Cristina - Nice rooms, free internet and close to La Merced.

Casa Encantada - High end place but at $65-$125(suite) during low season you get vastly more than back home.

Hotel Casa Rustica/Hotel Casa Rustica del Parque -Two hotels under same ownership. Both in good locations.

Earth Lodge - Located on a 40 acre avocado farm a few miles from Antigua this is a great way to spend some time in the country. Volunteer workers get a reduced rate. Low priced and excellent value.

Casa de los Huespedes Los Arcos-Nice hotel but a bit far from the center.

Hotel Posada del Hermano Pedro - Very nice hotel in the center.

La Casa del Huesped -Another $10 double. Kitchen access.

Hotel Casa de Leon -They also rent apartments by the night or month.

Quinta Macanda -This is not the typical place I talk about. But check out their website. One of the most beautiful small hotels you will find anywhere. If you are planning something special ..such as a honeymoon.. this is a place to consider. For the price of a mid-range hotel in a large US city or in western Europe you are getting something special.

Casa de Maco -You may miss this one as it is mistakenly listed with the high end places. But at $23 single/$30double it is just above budget.

Hotel El Meson de Maria -Not cheap with rates starting at $75 a double but very nice. First one I've seen to advertise handicapped accessible bathrooms.

Posada La Merced-Paty Wolf always recommends it and who is to argue with a biker chick who carries a hammer on her belt?

Hotel Mansion del Pensativo -3 blocks from the plaza this is one of the fanciest in the center.

International Mochileros Backpackers Guest House -Dorm and private rooms available.

Hotel Los Nazarenos -Close to La Merced. Singles start at $25. This is in an area of similarly priced hotels. Close also to the arch, which is the center of some of Antigua's best stores, restaurants and hotels.

Meson Panza Verde -It's attached restaurant is considered one of the best in Antigua. Rooms start at $75.

Hospedaje El Pasaje-Access to kitchen, roof terrace, close to market and buses.

Hotel Los Pasos - Located in an old, colonial building.

Hotel Primavera -Doubles under $10.

Hotel Posada del San Pedro -South of the park.

Hotel Quinta de las Flores - Beautiful upscale hotel but the casitas sleep 5 and are economical.

Hotel Casa Rustica - Something a bit different. Two locations both close to the center. Cheapest single is $17. There are more different room options...inglcuding larger groups than is usual. This caters to people going to Guatemala to adopt. Also means they are set up for people who make the error of traveling with kids.

La Casa de los Suenos -High end with singles starting at $85, though weekly discounts are available.

Hotel La Tatuana - Doubles from $36. Includes breakfast.

Hotel la Sin Ventura - Close to the Mono Loco. Attracts the Guat. City crowd on weekends.

Mexico

In General

All Mexico Hotels -Very few budget places here. Prices start in the $30s and go up and up. But, if it's your first night in a new place and you are a newbie traveler, going upscale for the can be a good idea. Then move to something cheaper the next day after you have scoped out the town.

Hostal Havre-New place in the Zona Rosa. The site has lots of info and photos. Certainly one of the cheapest deals in that area. If you go send me feedback.

Hostal Home - Location sounds interesting... between Roma and Condessa. I've had one good review and one bad. What's yours?

Hotel Azores - In the center. There are three other similar hotels on their website.

Hotel Brasilia- Mentioned here because it is close to the northern bus terminal. Not really convenient if you are staying in town.
