Honduras...

Some Real Gems Await You

While not as flush with places to visit as Guatemala, Honduras has some spots that should be on any traveler's "must see" list. You will notice that I don't have many places listed...yet. Some more will be added over time. Santa Rosa de Copan is increasingly becoming known as a destination rather than just a bus stop.

Places to Avoid

Couple towns are best only passed through.

San Pedro Sula is a large, industrial city. It has had press as the heart of Hondura's gang activity..particularly the Mares. Most of the crime there is directed to locals. Passing through is fine. Even spend a day or two...don't know why though. Just be aware it is necessary to be aware of your surroundings. Stay out of bad areas. SPS is a major air and bus hub so odds are you will be seeing parts of it.

Tegucigalpa, the capital, is not so much dangerous as boring. I wouldn't place it on my list of 100 things to do in Central America. It's twin city, Comayaqua, has more of a rep. for crime. Stay out of or be careful of the market area. Bus station is ..as is almost always the case...in a not so nice area. Take a taxi to and from. I usually list hotels I like...and ignore the others. For once I'm going to mention a place that just sets me on edge. That is the Tegu Airport Bed and Breakfest. Also it occasionally goes by the name Tegu Airport Backpackers. There are a few really basic rooms that count as the backpackers section. State from the beginning I haven't been there...though seen lots of photos. Rather my hesitation comes from numerous contacts from the owner. Overall impression of him is "slimey". I've always been lucky following my instincts. This place has been advertised by him on several forums. Funny thing...the couple glowing reviews out there by alleged guests read virtually word for word like his ads. My questions to him were met with evasions. When I declined to post glowing reviews of him online as he requested he got very beligerant. BTW...can't see why anyone...except maybe a businessman...would want to stay near the Tegu airport.

Tela

Not so much a place to avoid as to be aware of changes. 25 years ago this was a place to remotely camp or hangout at nearby Garifuana villages. Last few years there have been too many reports of robberies of people trying those activities. Best I can say is that if you are thinking about it check with locals about current conditions.
