Esquipulas...
Good for the Soul?
Not your typical tourist destination but one million Central
Americans visit this place each year. The reason is the huge Basilica which
contains the statue of the black Christ. It is reputedly responsible for numerous
cures. Coincidentally this area was a Mayan shrine centuries ago. Lots of hotels
in the area...prices are cheaper week days when the crowds are fewer. Near
the basilica is a big market with lots of stalls selling souvenirs to the pilgrims.
Don't ever say the stuff in Pana is tacky. This is only a short run from Chiquimula
which is the turnoff to Copan so with an extra day or so you could fit it in.
Same holds true if you are heading to El Salvador.
